Hi all,

Pretty new to the world of cichlids but am absolutely fasinated by them. With a special interest drawn to the Frontosa, would any kind be so kind to enlightened on the different type of Frons around and their differnces?

Cheers!

Post some pics. One way is 6 or 7 stripe. Another is price.

There are basically two as far as I am concerned. THe 6 stripe and the 7 stripe.

I know that several differant frontosa are being sold these days but as near as I can tell, these are just color varients of the same specie with fancy names or colloction location names. Some are pretty neat with stronger blue coloring. Some are real pricey too.

As stated above there are 6 and 7 stripe variations of frontosa.
There are many different variants of the 6 stripe.
The burundi, the most common and least expensive of all
devolops a huge "tumor" on there head. There is also
"bismarck"
"moba"
"kapampa"
"burundi" as stated above
"mpimbwe"
and many others. The difference is usually in the mask, or face region.
There are new variations still being caught in the lake and will
be named according usually to there collection spot. Some have biggers spawns,
and are easier to spawn. The Burundi, being the most common is the easiest
to spawn and usually have the largest spawns.
I personally have a small group of f1 (offspring of wildcaught) mpimbwe and love them.
Hope you find one you like.

check out the american cichlid asociation, also the choice of the front you choose depends mostly on striping, locality, and weither they are wild caught or not. Keep in mind that the best looking cichlids will always be wild caught, they have brighter color and better markings. Also make sure you have a nice size tank for them as they do get extremly large. The border has just been opened to ziaer so the nice Bright blue 7 stripes will be available very soon. They are really pricy but its worth it trust me. Good luck and PM me with any questions you may have on getting ahold of any frontosa's because i'm good friends with a few wholesellers and can get them for base price for you.
