Hey guys.

I was wondering if someone could ID which country my Dovii is from please?
Its a 6inch male :)

Also, how can you distinguish the different Dovii origins? Seeing on threads here, there seems to be a way to distinguish them?

Thank you!

Never kept dovii so I can't comment on your first question, other than to say your dovii looks nice!

As for your second question... I think in most cases the person posting the fish knows where it was collected because they bought from a reputable breeder or importer; Tangled up in cichlids, Afishionados, Cichlids if the Americas, those are a couple of places you can buy fish online and they know the origin of the fish they are selling.

Of course, there are probably geographic variants/colour forms that can help identify the source if you don't know where your fish or your fishes parents were collected from.

Thanks heaps for the auick reply DarylMac!
I live in Australia and Dovii are sort of difficult to find In the LFSs near me. I was lucky enough to be able to find a handful of them and picked out the nicest male.

Unfortunately I have no idea where its from and neither does the LFS. Was hoping the experts here would be able to give me their 2 cents :)

Unless it was specifically sold as a wild caught specimen (for massive money) from a specific location your location is probably "27th generation SE Asia Farm" as that is what most of our general import cichlid stock consists of. Retailers in Aus tend to buy through wholesalers importing from Singapore. That is assuming it isn't a few extra generations captive bred here.

Looks like a nice, well fed specimen, though.

Oh cool thats interesting! So no way to determine whether its from Nicoragua or Costa Rica? :)

I'm sure I've read somewhere that certain colour morphs are more likely to hail from specific regions - but I don't recall where.

Regardless, that's only part of the puzzle - I've noticed that depending on what lights you have you could be exaggerating certain colours inadvertently, which could lead to a false ID.

I'm guessing the most exact you're going to get is "Central America", anything more precise is a bonus!

I'm no expert but I think I've heard Nicaragua has a more streamline body and a bigger mouth whereas Costa Rican has a much taller body and a larger nuchal hump or the other way round. No clue, I'm sure some people on here will know duanes duanes

Well Nicaraguan have a blunt type snout and more stream lined body. Costa Rican has pointy snout with taller body. Then there's the yellow dovii which I forget the location. This is my experience along with what I've seen along with other people I know.

I've had a few, the yellow/green colored ones are the Costa Rican and the bluish/purple ones are Nicaraguan. Apparently they do have very different body shapes, the Costa Rican being more stocky and the Nics being longer bodied. Yours looks male too.
