Ive heard two main ways people do water changes when pumping water directly into a tank. The first is add the amount of chemicals for the total water volume, the second is add the amount of chemicals for the new water. Which do you do.
All depends on how clean the water is coming out of your tap. If clean all you gotta do is drain about 30% then fill from tap with the same temp water. After done filling dechlorinate. This is the procedure I do and have done it for years hth
It also depends on the product you are using. Some say to dose just for the new volume, others say for the whole tank. I use prime and dose for the whole tank. My process is I drain, add the prime, refill from the tap. I normally don't even turn the filters off, unless I am doing a huge change and the HOBS come out of the water.
is it safe to introduce chlorine and then dechlorinate....i have always dechlorinated the water and then added it but if its safe to add and then dechlorinate i may do that because its way easier
How are you doing your wter changes that makes it easier to add water before dechlorinating? Are you treating bucket by bucket or something? The way I do it is dose while tank volume with dechlorinator and refill. I would say you want to dechlorinate before adding new water so your fish doesn't get exposed to chlorine and chloramine.
I use prime...the label on the bottom says 1 bottlecap will work on 50 gallons for 4 mg/L chloramine or 5 mg/L chlorine. My tap water has way less than 5 mg/L chlorine and I believe no chloramines. I've used ~1/3 dose with no issues.
Edit: 1/3 dose as in dosing for 1/3 of total tank volume.
I don't use any dechlor,I fill a 480 l stainless steel tank 3/4 full with ro water, when that's to roughly the right level I top up with tap water then leave over night then the day I do my wc I heat the water up to the correct temp which is also pumped round the tank with a small powerhead and air pump then when I get home I pump it straight in my tanks once I've drained them.
If I need a bit of a top up,il put more tap water in the holding tank while its filling my tanks up and maybe put a bit of prime/tapsafe in at the correct dose but normally I don't need to do this.
I think I may try just the bubbles to agitate the water and turn it over but as I've got the powerhead I may as well use it,been doing it this way for years.
