Hi all. I am planning on changing my tank background to white coloured background.

I dont want to paint the glass, so what could i do as an alternative?

My tank is 5 x 2 x 2 feet. Bottom will be left bare.

Current thoughts are:

1) White background: Paint a 4mm sheet of hardboard with waterproof white paint. and prop the painted board at the rear of tank.

2) White Tile effect: adhere some very thin white tiles to an 8mm hardboard and once dry, prop the finished tiled-board at the rear of tank. (i will not bother fixing tiles internally to the tank)

I really want to do option 2. Has anyone done this sort of thing before?

Appreciate any feedback. thanks.;)

Whoa thats going to be a bright tank. I am interested in how you feel about it after you set it up.

You could pick up some contact shelf paper. The back of it is usually white regardless of what the face color is. It is easy to attach to the outside back of the tank because it is peel and stick. It can be purchased at 2' wide and usually is 6' long. That way you can see if you actually like it before spending alot of money and time making a white background. If you don't like it, you can just peel it off and only be out $3-$6. Any large chain like Wal-mart or Target will have it in the area of the store that has house hold kitchen stuff.

wow. Thanks for the promt responses. useful ideas been provided.

Why a white background? Darker colours tend to sooth fish and show their colours better.

My main craze is Tiger fish. I have seen some tiger tanks with very light backgrounds with equally as impressive colours as on a dark background.

Thought I would give it a go.

White latex paint, 3-4 coats should be enough. It's semi-permanent... but if you don't like it, latex isn't hard to scrape off glass.
