I have a tank with a bunch of tetras and I recently added some angels. The angels seem a bit slower and don't get as much food with all the tetras darting around and eating everything. Is there a way to make sure the angels will get enough to eat without just giving more food and overfeeding the tetras too much? Is overfeeding the tetras even an issue? Will overfeeding the tetras harm them aside from the extra waste that will be produced?

Depending on the size of the angels, you might try feeding them larger food that the tetras can't eat (eg pellets or bloodworms).

Feed a bit first, this gets the tetras over and eating. Then the angel should show interest and come over. Then try feeding a lot at one time, to insure the angel gets something, or try target feeding him with larger pellets/other foods. As for overfeeding, I wouldn't want obese fish (health issues), and the extra waste produced would not be good for the tank.

I've used turkey basters for smaller fish that don't come to the surface much. Larger fish you can add things too big for the faster ones to eat as has been said above. You can also try feeding a variety of sinking and floating food to separate out the groups.

I have this situation in my dad's tank with tetras and angels. I feed the tetras a floating flake and then while they're eating I drop in a sinking pellet for the angels and other cichlids... I even have a black ghost knife in the tank that attacks pellets. A hungry fish will usually learn to eat one way or another. ;)

Never seen a fish starve to death unless something else is wrong with it. You would be surprized how little a fish needs to eat to survive. Angelfish if healthy will find enough to eat as even tertas leave mess behind and spit some food out. I have two adult angels in a 65 with roseline sharks and larger tetras and I fees Nls only and my angelfish although very slow have been with these altra fast barbs for two years and I never really see the angels eat and they are just fine. I wouldn;t even make it an issue.

Overfeeding will just mean more waste. if you have really good water changing routines i wouldnt worry. I have angels but ive never had a problem with them not getting food theyre usually up at the top waiting for the food. usually if you get them use to waiting at the top for food theyll gte some before it falls. i usually feed a large floating pellet then a small pellet that sinks. if i didnt do this my catfish will never get food. lol

Over feeding tetras usually isn't to much of an issue as side from extra waste and more food being used. you might try placeing some food on one end of the tank to lure the tetras away and feed the angles at the other end. Larger foods are a good idea to try small cichlid gold pellets or large blood worms although tetras will usually go for blood worms to. its pretty funny watching them swim around with blood worms in there little mouths :)

I don't think throwing in extra amount of wood would be anything to worry about. Also several feedings a day the angels are bound to get something so they don't starve.
