Started off with 3 juvenile jags hoping to get a pair. Is this enough to start with? Last time I kept jags I started off with 2 and they spawned once they hit about 5" but I'm pretty sure that was more luck than anything. If I dont get a pair I will just keep a single male is this enough to start with to get a single male?

You will have better chances with a group of 6 to 8. That will increase your chances of getting a pair.
agreed.. you can try with just three but even if you wind up with a male and female there's no guarantee they will form a compatible pair. if you get 6-8 then you're almost guaranteed to get multiples of each sex and they will be able to make their choice in a partner.

J/k....agree with above posts but you could always get lucky as is.
guess i got lucky then. had a female jag at about 7 inches and threw in my male i had been growing out for a month at also around 7 inches and they had fry within a month.

a good way to guess at the sexes of jags at the store is that since the store's batch of young jags probably came from the same brood, the females will be the smaller (slower growing ones) and the males will most likely be the larger more dominent ones in the store's tank
