I agree. Metro isn't the cure for most HITH (which is generally environmentally caused; clean water with lots of changes and a little salt is all that's usually needed). When I use it for internal parasites I make a solution like peathenster said for soaking. For big fish I inject it into market shrimp or krill.
Agree with both. Definitely start with water changes and start using aquarium salt. Get the water condition great then see how the HITH is doing and go after that.
I really hope you guys are right. The oscar is 6in in a 55g soon to be 90. I set up an FX5 and an ac110 to keep the water perfect and weekly water changes. I will continue to feed it Metronidazole since there doesn't seem to be any harm in that.
if your taking care of the water like that then it really shouldnt be a water thing, what are your parameters when you test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? also what do you feed him as another thing that is believed to lead to HITH is a lack of variety in the diet, does he only get one kind of food? then again some Os are just really inbred and are ALOT more susceptible to it not matter how hard you try............Hopefully yours is caused by something wer overlooking and can be easily fixed!!!
Sarah, my water parameters for ammonia and nitrite are as low as they can be according to my Tetra master kit. I even keep 4 ratty Amazon swords the oscar likes to beat up on to keep the nitrates down.
As for food... Home made fish food – (blended white fish/shrimp w/ some greens and multi – vitamins) in mornings and hikari gold in the evenings.
Whats your Nitrate reading? 20ppm and lower is what is recommended for Oscars as thay can be very susceptible to HITH. Your wasting your time with Metronidazole as a form of HITH cure! It wont work short or long term!
Fresh clean water and a varied diet as someone stated above is the way forward to getting your Oscar back fully fit!!!
