i have a Mouthbrooding Geophagus Alto Sinu. Want to get the fry from her without stripping. Will she eventually let them go for good and if so will they survive without eating until she does?

She'll let them go when they get large enough. If they still have yolk sacs, leave them. After the sac is absorbed, they will survive as long as you feed them.

If you want to remove them anyways, the best I can offer is be quick with the net. It will take several tries to get all the fry out though.

I don’t see the yolk sacks. And I tried feeding them but when I go near the tank she puts them back in her mouth and the food was ignored

You can try simply waiting by the tank. If you stand in front of her long enough, maybe she'll figure out you aren't a threat and spit them out. You could try feeding them then. It sounds a bit stupid, I know.

I did this with a pleco that would run if it saw me from across the room, now it actually tolerates me feeding it.

If your fry are anything like angelfish fry, without yolk sacs, I'd say you have 4 days max to get some food in them, and thats if you have an old and established tank.

Otherwise, your best chance is stripping.

If you have a small tank that you could use to isolate her, net her out of the big tank and put her in it. She'll spit the fry out eventually and you can just return her to the main tank and the fry will be left in the small tank. I do this on occasion with Old World cichlids, although stripping fry is certainly quicker. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty easy.

She will not let them out until the yoke sac is used up, and they are ready to eat, and are probably better off in her mouth. Geophagines are usually great parents, unless you haven't removed all other fish, then the stress could cause loss.

Although I remove the male quickly, I usually ket them get quite large before removing the female parent.

Thanks for the reply! Yes she is in a 90g tank by herself. Just her and the fry in there. She has started to let them out occasionally but they don’t stray far. The yoke sacks are gone. I have tried feeding both her and the fry with no success. Just worried I won’t be able to get food to them

That is what I tried to do last night but when the turkey baster got near her she quickly put the all back into her mouth and all the food was ignored
