How to get gold jds?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Gold morph is a simple recessive gene, so yes you can breed them the same way as EBs with one big exception, you can also breed Gold to Gold and get 100% Gold offspring. Currently the Gold morph is much stronger than the EB strain is. Unfortunately, like EB, Golds all seem to be very closely related. If you decide to breed Gold X Gold, try to at least not breed siblings. Here's a pic of one of my Gold males and one of his broods. The fry are 100% Gold Morph.

Breeding to your regular would be fine, but you would need to find another Gold Gene (not one of the sibs) or another Gold to breed your Gold Gene fry with. I could most likely fix you up with a Gold or a Gold Gene when your ready. I've got two batches of Gold fry I'm raising now, and I have one pair of Gold X Regular that I hope to get some Gold Genes from soon.

Good luck finding two Golds that aren't siblings... I did some homework when I first started breeding the Gold Morphs and from what I could find there is one guy who is credited with 'keeping the morph alive' and he supplies most of the 'major retailers' that we buy from.

So I'm willing to assume that all the Golds available to us are either from this original source, or are the inbred offspring of his fish.

None the less... I agree with Mark that we should avoid simply breeding brother x sister.

Keep in mind, someone has put a lot of work into establishing a real nice breeding pair that has given many of us very nice Gold Dempseys. So if we were to simply buy two of his fish, breed them together, then distribute them... We are sort of screwing over the guy who did all the work.

I'm not suggesting you are planning to do this... just offering food for thought...

I have a pair of Golds as well as 'Gold Genes'... so if you breed yours with a standard Dempsey, you'll be able to find someone to trade for some distantly related Gold Genes ;) And I hope to trade with Mark some day too ;)
