How to get rig green algae?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Although i'll need more details to tell any better, here is what i'll suggest; it is apparently hair/fuzz algae and is very common in the initial phases of all planted tanks. It's is caused by fe excess, so if you're dosing any Fe you should cut back on that.

To control it, firstly you should remove as much of it as possible manually, use toothbrush or something similar and twirl it in it. then do a complete black out as instructed here..

Or you can keep removing it manually, and get the nutrients right, this will go away on its own as the tank matures.

Complete black outs do not work in planted tanks. For your algae the easiest solutions are 1) bleach solution dip (ask for more info, and this is only a fast solution, but not a long term solution) or 2) raise co2 levels. This can be achieved by flourish excel, or just upping your reg. The type of algae you posted is not often caused by excess iron, but rather phosphates. This is a difficult thing to control, and is much easier to try to limit, and keep plants growing fast with good lights, and good amounts of co2.

Thank you both Harsh & Wy. I did try to remove it manually & washed them out. Then they come back. My plant 100G plant tank established over2 years. But the alge just came out couple month ago.
I will try to raise co2 and let you know the result.
