So I got a red lotus at a LFS a couple of weeks back and it still hasnt sent any leaves towards the surface infact it really hasn't sent anything up at all in terms of new leaves....

I've got two lotuses in my 75, neither have sent any leaves to the surface in the month that I've had them. At the same time I got an unidentified lily thing (no idea what the names of all these are, they were free) and it has sent 5 leaves to the surface, and they grow extremely fast.
How big is your tank? If that's a 4 foot fluorescent bulb you probably don't have enough light.

If you have enough light then it is just a matter of time before that thing explodes, mine would take over my 150 in about two months (before I put more herbivores in my tank).
I got 2 bulbs and I got about 6-7 plants off those bulbs and more are growing in. Mine have not grown enough to send lily pad shoots to the surface, but if/when that happens I am cutting it. I don't have the room for it, plus it will block light to my other plants.
