My Sparkling Gourami is very reclusive and just sits in a cave at the back of the aquarium all day. There isn’t anything aggressive in the aquarium with him or her, just neon tetras and platies in a 20g. What can I do to encourage it to be more active?

I'd add plants, they tend to make fish feel safer.

Pic of tank?
I also think I have heard that sparkling grouamis fare batter in groups? Anyone else heard that?

+1 also make sure water is soft.

As in low PH? My PH is roughly 7.8 but I haven't tested in a long time.

I have a few real ones but they don't really provide too much cover. What area in the water should they be placed in?

Unfortunately don't have access to a camera right now but I can get a picture later today. I looked up how they do in groups and they need to be in groups with other fish of their species to be more active along with things to define their different territories. I think I could either plant the aquarium the gourami is in right now more heavier and add in a group or setup a 10 gallon for them to be housed in. Thanks for the tip :).

I'd plant it and add a group instead of setting up a new tank for them.

Do they like their plants in a specific area of the water column or can I just add plants wherever I like?

I have no experience with them sadly (plan to get some though) so I can't say for certain. If I was going to plant a tank for them then I'd go for however you like it along with some bush like plants that are short and low-ish to the ground so he can hide in them. Not anubias petite size but anubias nana size maybe? Some valls would be nice along the back or maybe in dense bunches in the back 2 corners.

Could you recommend some bush like plants please? Ive come up with Ludwigia so far. I actually have a jungle val that has two tiny runners.
