I have a large piece of driftwood in my second tank, it's been in a tank before, but it's leached alot of tannin into the water and the water is now red and cloudy. I have heard there is something you can put in your filter that will take it out? But have no idea what it's called. The tank is nearly finished cycling and only has plants in it at the moment. Any ideas would be great! Thanks

water changes, take the wood out and boil it for 15 minutes, pour the water out, let it sit and cool...
make sure to watch the pH. tannins lower ph so if you have africans or other alkaline fish, you may need to fix some things around there.

Ok testing water today to see where it is in it's cycle, so will do a water change after. Wood it too big to boil in anything, I don't have a pot big enough! Lol

the alternative is setting it in a bucket with water and changing the water every day until the water is relatively clear

adding carbon to your filter can help.

^ I second using carbon, especially if you don't have a tub or anything big enough to hold the wood in...

Nothing makes me more sad than seeing another piece of DW stripped of tannins.... (tannin lover) That said the easiest way to remove is through boiling the wood and water changes, if you cannot boil plan on soaking for a long period of time.

Many people will tell you it will lower your PH etc... But that all depends on the buffering capacity of your water. If your water is fairly hard, you will not notice any affect on a standard liquid PH test kit. :)

like said before boil it. I boiled a nice piece i found and it hasn't changed the water color at all. Also add carbon to help.

have a carbon pack for my filter but took it out as I had heard that it was also trap benefical bacteria when the tank is cycling? Will put it back in tho because I think tank has finished cycling, altho have failry high nitrates. I don't really mind the look of the tank too much, altho water is so red can't tell the plants are green! Lol
