Alright guys , i am into this hobby for little 2 years :).
And for the past 1 year into cichlids. When i first hold my flowerhorn, it was 5 inch in size and she got spikes all over her, and she was picking me up:irked:.
I see lot of you guys hold, your fishes normally how u guys do it.
When i hold them i usually get my hands cut on number of occasions.:(

why would you want to handle your fish in the first place? your just stressing them out when you try to.

Gently ease your hand moving from head to tail. This will flatten down the spines in the dorsal fin. Never move your hand from tail to head or the spines will get you. You shouldn't handle a fish unless its a necesity. In North America we get alot of practice when fishing for sunfish since they have spines very simular to cichlids.

Don't see why you would want to "hold" your fish. Stresses them out and you remove their slime coat causing and invitation to ich or other parasites. Use an appropriate size net.

maybe he wants to vent the fish? wouldn't that be a valid reason to hold it?

beyond that tho', I can't really see any reason to do it either . . .

Or go fishing for practice. When I had discus I could hand them out if they were looking unwell to check for problems, although most fish won't let you do this.

leave your fish in the water
