How can you be sure that the Hoplias/ Wolf Fish you're purchasing is the real Aimara? Please advise the distinguishing marks/ characteristics to look for.

Thanks for your help guys!

TBH, you'd probably have better luck if you went to the LFS and took a picture of the fish you were thinking of and posting it up. AFAIK, no ones done anything like a wolf fish ID guide and I myself don't yet have the knowledge base to help.

it easy and too many words to explain in the same time. Too lazy to research and explore yourself?

WOW, I think somebody woke on the wrong side of the bed! None the less, you should do more research on what ever specific fish you're interested in cause you'll learn alot more about them than just identifying traits. Learning new things really is the fun part of doing research.

lol. if it's too broad of question, why not do some research first? just giving advice.

Hi guys! Thanks for your replies. I did my homework and did some research on the web before I posted the question. Basically, the characteristics/ markings I got to determine if the hoplias is an amaira is the vertical line/ mark on the end of the soft membrane of the gill plate and the fish's size.

Hope you can help further.

Thanks!

The head shape and the large eyes will clearly determine if the wolf is an aimara or not.

It's supposed to be in the jaw line, flip the fish over and look at the jaw lines, some bend in, some run parrallel, I'm not sure how to distinguish each, but that's how they properly ID Hoplias.

Don't get me wrong. see enough pics and head shape stands out, and the eyes are uncommonly huge when they're small, but seems like they go through a juvie stage that makes it kinda hard to tell after the fish catches up to the eyes, and before it starts to gain thickness, that makes it kinda tough to tell at that age, but this is just my opinion. Some may be able to tell at a glance, but having one I still don't think I'd be good enough to judge from a pic.

I've always went with the best way to tell is to get them from a reliable source.....

IF you look hard enough you'll stumble across a site based on wolves. So much info there it makes your head spin, talk of each species having several different "variants" or locales. Like 6-7 different Aimaras, some so rare that only a few are known to the hobby, and it seems many of them reside under a single roof. Samahri -h I believe is his handle. Should be king of the wolves.

KRSwop1 would be a good guy to hit up to do an ID sticky, but I haven't seen him around for a while......
