Hi guys,

I am considering buying a couple of EBJD. However, there are less than a handful of store in Bombay (India) which have this for sale.

The ones I looked at were not very "neon" blue (but that could be cause they are stressed). However, more importantly, they had black marking on their bodies very close to that of a Salvin... In some specimen, this black pattern seems to be more than the actual (neon) blue coloration on the dorsal part of their bodies.

(Price for a couple was 4500 Indian Rupees (or about 100 USD) at about 4 to 5 inches in size.)

I was wondering if you can give me some guidelines for judging if a specimen of EBJD is a good one.

Thank you,
Sid

I dont know what the market is like in India, But $100 is exremely high compared to what you find in the states. EBJD are very delicate fish, and not many make it to adulthood, which is why I think $100 for a juvi is an outragious price. If you have your heart set on a EBJD, look for the most healthy one in the batch. Look for deformities in the mouth and the fins. Any deformities the fish probably has poor genetics and wont live very long. But quality is judged by the amount of bright blues and the black pattern as well as gold markings that some carry. But you say they are 4-5 inches which may indicate some pretty healthy specimens.

yeah at 4-5in that is great, most readily available here are only 1-2in and already $20-40 and many die of parasites since they are so fragile at that size, at 4-5in they should be pretty healthy and stable, the main thing to look for is their face, make sure that the lips close together properly and that their forehead slopes down gradually and does not create a beak-like snout, these guys will get more blue as they grow and will lighten up once they are in your tank and not stressed anymore, they get darker when they are sick or unhappy so if you get them i would make sure to watch their poo closely for signs of white/stringyness which would indicate parasites and before you buy them i would ask to see them eat, the ones with the most voracious appetite would be the better choices GOOD LUCK

if they have a beak like a parrot fish would have they usaly dont grow more then 3-4"

One of my hardiest, toughest, most aggressive ebjds was the ugliest fish you ever saw. I sold him when he was 6", and as far as I know, he's still kicking. It IS true that deformities tend to mean weak fish, however.

Its hard to tell what they will grow up to be. mine had a good shape head at 2" great color he had a little bit of a dent in his side. The color and his body have changed.

Its been a year and he is only 4" and the only thing that seems to be growing on him are his deformitys. I'm disapointed with how small he is and how big his beak got. But besides that he is fairly healthy.

Only way to get a good one and know its a good one is from a breeder that knows what they are doing.

You want deep rich coloring with a nice metallic blue coat. You do not want to see a beak mine has a slight beak but I'm still willing to work with him for my EBJDxBGJD spawns. Should be active even in the LFS tanks.
