ok, i have kept cichlids for along time and have problems with keeping the texas cichlid alive, can the people who have them to adulthood please tell me what they feed them how much. filteration, water changes.... there has to be some sort of combo that works so if you have a tex thats over 6in please let me know how you do it.

I do 90% weekly water changes, feed Omega ONE as a stable (along with treats), water 78-84 F, 55g tank.

Secrets? I don't think so, this is a hardy cichlid.

Always kept them same as my CAs.78 deg.,water changes 7-10 days, fed hakari pellets, aquadine, krill and whatever:)

it could be possible you bought a sick texas....as they are very hardy cichlid as mentioned earlier

I too have heard they are hard to keep when small. Clean water and regular water changes is probably important.

ive had them before i had my lil jaguar which is now huge...and i had the texas when it was still a fry with all the other texas fry's...till it was 9"...and it wasn't hard at all...just do frequent water changes...check your parameter ever so often....feed it a varied diet and all the other important stuff

I was thinking that maybe i was overfeeding them and my first batch possibly had bloat. All my other cichlids in same tank were fine and the texes died one at a time.does the pellets expand in the stomach?

how small were they again when you had them? Also do you know how large the pellet was? baby, small, medium, large? and i don't believe pellets expand in the stomach...they just get soggy thats all when lots of water is on it....

They should be tough as nails!

Both cyano's and carpintis are very sensitive to poor water at sizes between 2 and 5 inches. Before and after this, it's almost impossible to kill them.

I kept some in a 55 with 30% water changes every other day and ran 800 gph. (they were with various other growouts though) I also find that cyano's like a ph around 7.2 and carpintis like it lower at around 6.8. (not that it matters much though.) Sudden ph or temperature swings is what kills them IME.
