Last Sunday, while buying salmon for my sashimi in China town of Buenos Aires, I saw a barrel of eels. I bought 6 of them (They cost less than $2 a pound) and tossed them in a 30g with a bubbler. There is no filter/heater. The water is very dirty. When I put in some beefheart they eat it. They are cool fish and I want to keep them.

I think that they are common eels, anguilla anguilla. I did a search but can't find much info. Apperently they have a very complicated life cycle.

Anybody knows how to keep them?

I am pretty sure that the Europen eel, anguilla anguilla, is almost exactly the same as the American eel, anguilla rostrata, excpet for where they live. If they are anything like them, then they require low maintaince, with water quality of whatever you want, although with no filter you should do water changes. They go from a range of temps, probably nothing higher than 75F though. They eat almost anything from live fish, worms, crustaceans, insects, & frozen thawed food. They jump out of your tank like crazy, so keep it covered and sealed, although they can survive for some time outside of water in a relativley damp enviorment. They can get pretty big, close to 5' so if you want to keep them all you will probably have to move them. Or if they get to big, you can use them as bait or you can eat them. They can live a long life, up to 20 years.

i have a anguilla type eel in my tank hes real tame he eats from my hands i feed him frozen silver sides and black worms hes a foot long now they grow at a moderate rate. i dont know much now but a little mine might be a anguilla anguilla but i dont realy know.
