Help again MFK! Sorry for all the questions, but my nitrate is to high. My aquarium was fine, but the purple seafan started to lok sickly.I checked the parameters and everything but the nitrate was fine. Please help and thanks.

What number are you getting that you are thinking it's "high"?

Quickest way is to do a water change... but I want to make sure it's really a nitrate issue before saying do a big WC.

+1...make sure to check for areas of detritus accumulation, because if you have stuff rotting in tank that you're unable to get to a WC might not even help but only for a day or so.

Purigen is also a good way to help drop it.

High as of 100ppm. i already did a 20% water change too.( I would have done that anyway today) I will go back and search for something that could be causeing that too.

Also, what are your running for filtration? I am assuming this is in the 125g.

Why dont you start giving us some of the (as many as you possibly can) details about your tank?

Perhaps you screwed up the Nitrate test - maybe you shaked too long or not long enuff giving you a false reading or your Water Co. is using chloramine which is giving a false reading. If you use tapwater and it tests over 8ppm (federal law) than contact them - more than likely their using chloramine.

I've never seen or heard of nitrates higher than 60ppm - the other alternatibve would be a large rotting carcass and will show up on ammonia and nitite tests.

Do a 100% water change, closely monitor how much nitrate raise everyday by testing.
If it is still raises up fast, there is a problem.

Could be
- Overstocked
- Overfeeding
- Tons of gunk in the substrate
- Something died
- Filter have become nitrate factories

More info could help. Like tank size, tank inhabitants, nitrate reading from tap, substrate used...
With your limited statement, its hard to determine the problem.

Sorry for the late response...have been busy.(= Anyway I tested my tapwater and that was 0ppm. I double checked my water and it is still very high. My aquarium is 29 gallons with a penguin 330 filter and a new aquarium fish tank protein skimmer 180 w/ pump. Two snails died today, but everything else but the 2 corals are fine. Is there anyway to save the corals? One is almost being stripped down to almost nothing while the other is doing better but still is not looking to good. Thanks for all the replies so far.

I remember when i tested for nitrates and my water would be blood red every time...until months later perfect water :)

You have a 29 gallon tank:

What Live Stock?
Do you have any dead spots (Areas where thier is no water circulation)?
When do you do water changes? (Always important to maintain water quality)
How often you clean out your filter? (Could be that you clean your filter too much...or too less)
Do you have a fuge (Helps a lot, but not needed)
Protein Skimmer (Helps a lot, but not needed)
How is your other parameters? (If you posted it...sorry didn't read it then)

...WOW after I write this long list...I realize Spirit already hit it....

For stock I have 2 brittle stars, 2 nerite snails, 2 cerith snails, 2 purple sea fans, 2 emeraled crabs, and tons of blue leg hermit crabs. I have no fuge, but want one soon.(= I am not sure about the dead spots, and will get exact readings later.(have to go!!)
