i was wondering because i have a 20 gallon tall thats free but has no filter so i was thinking of making one can someone give me the steps to make one?

I used an old sun tea jar once. Hung paint strainer bags on the lip and filled it with scrubbies, and the water poured out of the hole back into the tank. Just used a little fountain pump to power it. It alone was able to filter a 55g tank with an Oscar in it for several months.

Check out the threads on here about Top Filters.

Also, a plug for air-powered sponge filters.

I made one from a storage bin Stacker. Worked Alright and the drawers made it easy to clean the filter media. Just make a sump with filter sock. Far best setup IMO

You could build a diy undergravel filter. they are very efficient once the tank is cycled. when you get the cash you could put a powerhead on it.

here is a filter I have always wanted to try just no extra$ for the pump maybe you can do it
