My F0 festae pair has bred through a diver 4 times now and every time the female has eaten her eggs. Has anyone experienced this?

My male will not let the female live unless divided. I've tried taking the divider out when the female's tube drops but the male would not leave her alone. I'm about to fill the tank with dithers and shelter for the female and take the divider out eventually with a close eye. The last time I took out the divider it lasted about 2 days and she was looking pretty rough.

The male is probably 9-10" and the female is probably around 6" and they're in a 125. I was thinking the dithers would distract the male and possibly strengthen the pair, as well as make the female protect the eggs instead of eating them.

My next step is to try and find another female this summer, but I'd rather just figure out how to make my pair get along.

i've known alot of people who use dividers for their cichilds did you cut out a whole big enough whole for the female festate to swim through but the male can't so if your male tries to kill the female she could get away from him, this method i'm speaking of is pretty common i would remove the eggs and put them in another tank just for the offspring

Pull the eggs after fertilization and put them in a hatch tank :) Or just wait til the female get's it right :)

I've tried twice unsuccessfully to breed Festae...........thought i had good pairs but the males killed the females both times. I've read article after article on RT breeding and came up with this.................The Male Festae will kill any female he deems defective in any way. What exactlly he finds defective would only be a guess on my part. To find that one perfect female buy a fry of 8-10 let them grow and let the alpha pick his mate himself.............the other festae's are the perfect difusor for me so far.............I have 3 males and 5 females,,,,,,,,1 alpha male and 2 alpha females;
he hasn't made his choice just yet but the aggression in the tank comes from the females not the dom. male. and it's hardly a warzone Tank and Tankmates workin' well so far. They don't list the Red Terror has one of the top 5 most aggressive cichlids on the planet for no reason.

I do have holes cut in the divder for the female and he lets her visit now and then, but he's a bastard for the most part. I would just start pulling the eggs, but now she'll lay a string of them and turn around and eat them. I guess they taste pretty good.

Was curious to see if anyone else had this problem and if there were any tricks. I guess I'll just have to watch and wait, maybe the 5th time's a charm
