i bought 4 burundi frontosas and threw them into the tank with my slightly larger one. now hes attacking all the fronts. is this temporary or will he get rid of them all. i know nothing about group formations. made the assumption that if the rest are smaller than the dominant one then everything is ok.

It really shouldnt be a problem. My Alpha male is 7 or so inches and my other 3 fronts are 4-5 inches and I have no problems. Fronts usually do better in groups or colonys. It also depends though if they are all male. I have 2 males and 2 females and mine do fine. Really you probably want one male and 2-3 females per male to keep agression down. Try venting your fronts and see if they are all male.

oh wow ok def. to small to tell sex. I would think that once they get used to the tank and their territory is set they should be fine. My fronts were 1inch to 3inches when I got them, but I had more at that time and once they all settled down I didnt have problems but I did have fin nips here and there. Just make sure the tank is big enough for all 4 of them and I would think they should be ok. If not take the larger one back and look for another one around the same size as the rest of them.

weird. theyve settled down now or theyre on the other side of the tank where the larger one cant get them.
do they form groups at this size? how would i be able to know which ones to remove?

well if your problem is the big one picking on the small one it would make sense to remove him. Then again another one may become dominant and do the same thing. Although it may be better to buy more b/c they do better in larger groups maybe get 7-8 total and agression may calm down and equal out. Just keep an eye on them and see if it continues. I would add more though. Just make sure you have a tank big enough for all of them when they are larger, or when they are venting size then vent them out and keep a good male:female ratio and then sell the others that you dont plan to keep. For now I wouldnt worry though, its a new tank give them time. =]

still a little small... some agression with new fish into a group is common. give it some time. They will also pick at each other from time to time... it is okay... now if they are lip locking often then worry...

i did a water change a re-arrange and theyre fine with each other now. i noticed a smaller frontosa picking on my largest one twice. he just submitted.

how does an alpha male grow faster than the dominant male. can any fish become an alpha male? doesnt make sense to me. seems crazy to me because a fish thinks "oh im vice president im gotta grow faster than the president"
