Alright guys so i picked up a male mayan at the lfs about 3 weeks ago. Hes already about 8 inches and looks awesome. Hes in a 100 gal tank with a 5" male convict and a pair of 5" green texas im growing out for another tank. Hes been getting along fine but hes just so shy when i come around! I know older cichlids take longer to settle in and get comfy than younger ones but he wont even eat around me. Its been a solid 3 weeks and when i feed the others in the tank i have to walk away out of sight and only then will the mayan come out and eat. If he sees or hears anyone coming hes goes to the back corner and hides. How long will this last? And does anyone have any tricks or tips to make him more comfortable? Here's a pic of him

8 inches and shy.....wow.
My guess is few more weeks and he should be more comfortable.
Also noting the fact that he is new.

Very nice Mayan. I think you have a female w/ the blotch on the dorsal fin. Any aggression from the tank mates? Maybe adding a school of dithers would help.

I agree with cichlidfish, the blotch does indicate female, the profile looks feminine too.
And yep, snorkeling there with the Mayans was an absolute blast.

Thats awesome! Apprently mine may be a female ive heard now, in time will i still that very comfortable "first one in the food line" attitude from a female or are they always a little more in the shy side compared to males?
