I have a good friend that owns an auto shop and is very good w/ metal work. What are some simple plans/guidlines to follow for building a stand for a tank thats 72x30x24? Id like the stand to be 36" tall. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If he or she is any good at all they probably don't need any help, but hey, Build it out of 2 x 2 x .120 wall, six uprights, perimeter top and bottom. Crossmembers on 2' centers. Done correctly this ought to be plenty. If you want it to withstand an 8.0 earthquake throw a diagonal brace in both directions from the top rear corners(this is probably overkill). :)

Thanks for the quick reply. I just wanted an answer just in case there was any questions.

What would an est. price be? What would you charge? And can I drill holes in it to add an insulation/wood barrier around it?

I don't know, you can't afford me , and yes. LOL:ROFL:

i built one for my 150 gallon ill post a pic later if you want? but i just used quarter inch thick angle iron i built a rectangle for the top and bottom then welded 38 inch strips on the corners the stand sits 41 inches tall and is stronger than any wood stand i have ever seen. i drilled 3-8 holes and bolted 1x6 pine boards going across it to finish it up. cross beams are good but not needed imo. just make sure your friend is a good welder and gets everything very square

I am building a stand for the exact same size tank this weekend. I got 2x2 1/4 wall steel. I designed it to be 36" tall but am now dropping it to 32". I am using 3 20' pieces of steel that I got delivered for $310. I am doing 6 down posts and bracing around the bottom and front to back on the bottom. I am considering gusseting the corners, but have not decided yet. I have also felt a couple of earthquakes and watched my 240 get shaking on a wood stand so the steel I bought is a bit over kill in the thickness, but is worth it for the piece of mind.
