How to make vertical roots in an aquarium?

I know I could just use wood but I want to be able to make it how I want it exactly. Would it work if I just laid out a rough design and then cut it more exactly with a knife, and then sanded it to make it rounded and textured?

You could just use roots... Unless you're talking about something fairly large scale.

Foam would be an ideal Choice.
