I can't seem to find an existing post on this, but I'm sure someone must have asked it before:

"What's the best way to measure the length of a fish?"

More specifically, short of netting it and pinning it next to a ruler, what's the most human and efficient way to measure a fish in a tank?

I would think I could take a picture of the fish up against the glass and, with known tank dimensions, estimate the length by comparison. Are there any other tried-and-true methods?

Thanks!

Wrong section...

But what you can always do is set an object that has a know size against the tank and snap a picture when the fish swims by. That will give you a known reference and from there you estimate.

One of the best ways I know of short of netting the fish .

:iagree:yup for accuracy its netting
for estimations compare it to stuff in your tank

Just wondering which section this should be in if not here?:)

Stick a ruler, estimate and round it off. Unless you want every single millimeter then good luck.

its not really hard
have a friends help u
first net the fish and hold out your hand to keep it from jumping (still in the net)
the quickly have a friend come and measure it

i sit with the tape measure out and throw in a few pellets then i get a pretty good approximation of size as they swim the length of the tank and i hold the tape measure up.
i wont take a fish out of the water, like some do, just to measure it. thats just cruel and unnecessary.
i am going to measure my fish when i move house when they are out of the tank and being transferred to their mobile home.
