Hey everyone. Well, it seems that my family and I are moving to a new home only about a block away. It might seem dumb to move that close but strangely that house is much bigger and has a garage where I can stuff in more tanks!

I have a 55 gallon and a 30 gallon with fish. How Do I move them? It will take a while for us to move everything from one house to another. So I dont know if the fish can survive the winter cold without their heaters. So what should I do?

What I did with my 35G is leave is runnng at the old house untill everything unpacked nd in its place Eg, Fridges, TV's, Couches etc. Then, on the final trip, drain the tank, unhook everything, pack it, take decor out and place in bags, containers etc.
Now, I went to my LFS and just brought some bags that they use to bag thier fish. I got 11 LARGE ones for about 2 bucks.
So you've netted and bagged the fish, drained the tank, tanks completely empty, and all the hardware is in boxes. Now, in a ute or large car lift the stand, hood, tank into it and secure very well. Place hardware and such in a non moveable place. IE, in a big box thats tied down. Lasty, Get a styrofoam box and place the fish bags in that. Close lid, secure and drive off.

Now the hard part.
Unload the tank, setup hardware, warm water, add decor, fill up etc.
Then aclimate your fish to the new water. Done.
Thats the way I did my 35G. Its MUCH easier to leave till last.

Get some rubbermaid tubs. Move the fish, then add an aerator while you set up the new tank.

Yep, do what ewurm said. If you can transport some of the old water with you, I'd use as much of that as possible. Or you could time your next waterchange to coincide with the move and retain a smaller percentage of original water.

I dont have the money to buy those huge 300 gallon tubs. Plus, what should I do about heat?

When I moved, I made sure to move the tanks a day before I moved anything else. I used a bunch of 5 gallon buckets to keep the fish and their water with filter media. I only moved a couple of miles away. I think the fish were in the bucket for a total of an hour. I was able to move about half of their water, so it made it like a large water change.

wal mart sells big tubs real cheap..i agree with using as much of the original water as possible helps the cycling. also i wouldnt be too concerned about the heat if your only going a little ways away, keep the heat on in the car

just get a 5 gallon bucket or a rubbermaid tub thats like 10-30 gallons, put some of your tank water in it, put your fish in it, and put the filter media in it. once you get there if you have HOB filters, hang them on the bucket or tub and let them run with the media in there. then set up the tank, move all the water and fish in the tank, hook up heaters, add new water and turn the filters on....done
