My apologies if this has been covered already, I tried searching but couldnt find what I was looking for. Ive got two of them on my 55 with my flowerhorn who eats a lot of massivore and krill, and Ive been using the standard carbon cartridges for it. I also have a powerhead pulling through a tube filled with biomedia in there.

Ive been meaning to step up to something better media wise but Im not in the mood to experiment, and Im looking for something that is more effective but I also dont want to just jam floss and sponges in there, Id like to be able to take it out for easy cleaning.

The 350 is like a smaller 400, it has two outflows where you can put two cartridges in each.

Im thinking I got two options: I can either put some sponges, biomedia and/or floss in those filter bags, or the preferred option would be to make a set of diy cartridges loaded with all that stuff. I can do both sides the same or one mech, one bio, but I think I prefer to heve mech then bio in both.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Guess you are talking about the Penguin 350.
They have 2 available slots per side for media.
When I had mine, I found some 6X9in. ScotchBrite pads that, with a little cutting, slid right in.
It`s my understanding that they fit right in the Emperor 200 & 400 as well.
I ran 4 in each 350, all slots filled.
They were cheap, around $7 for a box of 20.
Reusable and did a fine job.
Rinse and slap them on the side of the sink to get the gunk out.
Others have used quilt batting held to a "stripped" stock filter frame.
Some have put media in after market, clam shell frames.
Some go to walmart and buy the AquaTech, 30-60 cartridges, which fit right into the Penguin.
There`s a few ways to go.

Thank you Kaiser, I will definitely implement the scotchbrite pads as my first stage, then maybe get a clamshell with biomedia for the second slot.

If anyone knows a source for the clamshells, Id like to fit the biggest one in there.
