I was wondering how you guys pick fish for a community tank? Just try some and see how they do together? Wasn't sure?

I'm not sure. I don't know much about the differences between the three.
if you never had African Cichlid's before, please read about it before you do anything,i started 20+ years ago and i am still learning new things all the time,,,,dont get wrong there are many great members here but read about it also...good luck...:)

Well I did a bunch of looking through fish profiles today and found some I think I might like, just not sure which ones would be able to go good together? Here's a list of the possibilities I have come up with so far.

Nimbochromis venustus
Protomelas taeniolatus (Red Empress)
Astatotilapia latifasciata
Labidochromis caeruleus
Aulonocara walteri
Hemichromis fasciatus
Aulonocara nyassae
Aulonocara jacobfreibergi
Aulonocara maleri (Sunshine Peacock)
Aulonocara sp. "Turkis" (The Turquoise Peacock)
Copadichromis azureus
Copadichromis borleyi
Placidochromis sp "johnstoni solo"
Haplochromis venustus
Gephyrochromis zebroides
Aulonocara ethelwynnae
Aulonocara gertrudae

Go all male. Mix would work, just no females. I would also lose the mbuna, you have some larger haps that would eat the mbuna, or the mbuna will stress the haps when smaller.

My list was just some of the possiblities I had thought about, I don't plan on using all of them, just wanted to pick a few. I would like to try to breed some of them so I would like to have some females even if it meant having a few less fish in the tank. Or am I just looking for trouble doing this?
