Could someone please advise on how to prepare driftwood collected from the wild for placement in a freshwater tank? Was told to boil W/ salt. How long? How much salt? Regular salt? Will the salt affect the fish, even though I'll rinse well after boiling? Also, will it float, which I don't want? And, will it sink eventually, or, am I out of luck. I bought a couple of small pieces from the pet store, nice & dark, prepared obviously, but would be costly if I wanted to fill up my tank, which I do. Thanks for the kind assistance!

boiling it for a couple hours is what is the general rule of thumb. then what i do is place in a plastic tub with hot water and change the water 1-3 times daily, or until it is do leaching tannins, for me this usually takes at least a week. also a good scrub wouldnt hurt. as for salt, i have never used it,but if i were to, i would use aquarium salt used for ick,electrolites,ect...i wouldnt recomend saltwater salt or table salt though...

agree with joey020283's method. do make sure it is properly free of tannins 1st though coz it is VERY hard to get water back to clear after tannins are in your tank. but i luuuurvve bogwood so i give it about a week and half soaking to make properly sure.
