Hi all,

Recently I bought a 3" royal pleco from the store and put it in 50L/2feet tank, with just one large piece of driftwood in the middle.

So far I can tell its chewing on the wood as I see poo all over the bottom and my filter wool needs to be changed every week..

But I was wondering am I still missing something or how do I take better care of it?

-I read that pleco(s) chew on sillcon? Would mine chew on it too?

-how do I tell the sex apart?

-Is it adviseable to have all 4 types of royal in one tank?

-I was thinking of upgrading to a 5x2.5x2.5/210 gallon tank with rays and arowanas only but advisable or stay in the 50 gallon tank?

Would any pleco master advise on this.. Please and thank you

Zucchini... now! I learned this the hard way so now I buy a decent size zucchini every week. I cut it in half and then cut each half in half again lengthwise to put on a spoon to sink to the bottom. I do this twice a week so they get half of the zucchini twice per week. I put it in at night just before the lights go off and then I clean whatever is uneaten in the morning. When I first started getting mine I read of the importance of driftwood so I had that but they still kept dying. Nobody stressed the importance of veggies enough in the threads I was reading many years ago. So that's what I'm doing now... your royal needs drift wood to rasp on and veggies for his digestion. You can choose from many different veggies but for me, zucchini was the easiest and healthiest and now all my plecos love it. They really start coming out of the woodwork as soon as those hit the bottom of the tank. I have over a dozen plecos though so I'm not sure how many you have (just one?) and how much you will go through but that's something you can figure out as you go along as I have since everyone's situation is different. Good luck! Love my Royals!

I have tried to feed my Royal Zucchini and he wouldn't touch it. I put in in the tank 3 days in a row and it is still whole in the morning. Does it take them a while to figure out what to do with it? May be I should try it again.

Yeah, keep offering it. They will eventually take it and will love it. Some plecos within the same species even can take a while to warm up to it. It's like they don't realize it's edible but once they do they'll love the stuff.
