how to properly remove hair algea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hi I also stuggle with this problem and am currently experimenting with different methods , from what i have read on it as with any algae it is caused by excess nutrients , nitrate and phosphate are big culprits ,so I have been cutting down on feeding and have done large water changes to lower nitrate (mine comes out the tap at 15 ppm so its always a battle to keep them under control ) i am hoping to try using willow branches to suck up nutrients as i had sucsess with this many years ago with a bout of green water so i will let you know if this helps . short term all you can do is use a tooth brush to get if off plants and use the handle of toothbrush to wind the long strands round and them gently pull it out the tank . I hope this helps

Howdy,

You have to distinguish between hair algae and green algae. If it's indeed like long hair, then that's actually a sign of good water quality. Green algae, on the other hand, indicates excess nutrients.

You can easily remove hair algae with a rough wooden stick, e.g. skewer. Just roll it up and pull it out.

Best of luck,

with that said I had hair algea on one of my plants and now it seems to be more of a furry darker green algea that I have noticed in the past few weeks???

"furry" algae means excess nutrients (bright green algae) and/or poor lighting (dark algae). What are your nitrate and phosphate levels, and how old is your bulb? You should consider a new bulb if it's older than 1 year...

My lighting is brand new Glo T5 HO double bulb fixtures with marine glo and power glo bulbs everything is new

There we've got it.
Marine lighting is not suitable for freshwater tanks. Unless you have a saltwater tank, it will quite often induce algae growth just like you now observe it. Change the bulb to something suitable for freshwater, and your algae problem should go away within a a few weeks.

So far of what Ive see harly is correct marine lighting deosnt work but yet i see the same thing on my lg. amazon sword with correct lighting and i think if its stilll there after you change the bulb, and if its appearing on dieing leaves i know why its because its trying to heal in some sort of way of what Ive examined or part of the decaying leaf thats releasing from the leaf
