My jack dempseys were not breeding, so i figured they needed a spark to get them to breed. I taped a big mirror the size of the tank to the front of the tank and now they are all excited trying to attack themselves in the mirror. Ive seen this on youtube, and the person was successful at getting their jack dempseys to breed with this technique. I was just wondering how long i should keep the mirror up for? It looks like its working very well so far. I have had the mirror up for 30 mins and they are going crazy at it and the female has her breeding tube out now! Any info on how long to keep the mirror up would be awesome. Thanks!

I don't think you can rely on this technique and expect direct results. I'm sure this method is dependent on variable circumstances. If I were you I'd focus creating the right environment, make sure your fish are mature enough to breed, and even if they are properly sexed. I have done the mirror "trick" simply to see the reaction of my fish- sometimes not the best decision- especially when the fish start getting violent and destructive to themselves, tankmates, and tank decor even. I know it used to bring out the colors on my oscar, jd, and even pike- other than that I dont think it properly allows for breeding circumstance. So... put the mirror away until you've covered everything else.

Just look up "Jack Dempsey, Breeding" in the Search- within Breeding section and see what pops up-i assure you, you will receive better info- rather than relying on youtube.

Hey,
This pair has bred before but havnt in a while, so i was trying to get them excited. I actually read it on a site all about breeding JD's and he had a video link to youtube of his fish fighting in the mirror. It seems to be getting them pretty excited but I can monitor them right now so i took the mirror down for now.
