I am going to compile what I have learned and been taught over the years by flowerhorn masters. Since this is a VERY in depth topic I will why to break it out in a couple of post on lunch breaks at work over the next couple of days.

What is pumping?
Pumping is a term given to bulking up a fish over a period of time to increase them mass, KOK color and pearls of the fish.

Environment
Your tank need to be longer and deeper vs. narrow and taller as well have very good filtration and water flow. Its very critical to do the basics of watching your water parameters as well keeping the heat at around 83f or 29c. you want to have a colorful background as well not use substrate to ensure the cleanest water possible. You can add handfulls of larger gravel or rocks to the bottom of the tank for the fish something to play with. I also recommend painting the bottom of the tank for a cleaner look. You will need to do 20-30% water changes weekly with aged water that has been treated with a declorinator. A mirror can be added tot he tank for 20min a day for the fish to attack but suspend in the middle so it can move around and do not add to the sides of the tank. As for lights you dont want to overpower the fish and pink freshwater bulbs work well to enhance the color of the fish as well 50/50 bulbs to enhance the blue pearls. Keep the lights on a daily schedule that corisponds to the light outside. Finding the proper PH is also critical and depending on where you fish came from its always recommended to ask the shource for the ph the fish was kept at. I have good luck with a higher ph of 7.8 but also avoid using chemicals and use crushed coral in increase ph and peat moss/malysain drift wood to lower.

Lighting
Ok I have only disclosed this to a couple of people and has been a technique I have used to pump my fish fast. I use a modified lighting schedule for the fish keeping the light on for 72 hours then giving them 10-15 ours of no light. By doing this the fish will continuously moving building mass and increasing in size. If you choose to do this you MUST stick to a strict diet mentioned bellow otherwis eyo may suffer a negitive result as well you will need to vac the bottom of the tank 1-2x a week as they will be producing more waste as well sticking to a strict water chaning schedule. NOTE fish can get insomnia and I dont recommend continuing the lighting technique after 5". This is to get your fry to adult faster for showing and it works.

Food.
This is critical in bringing out the full color and KOK of you fish. You need to feed your fish a varried diet of pellets 2-3x as well some live/frozen foods creating a pellet sandwitch. My pellet blend consist of 1/3 Hikari Gold which is a solid base pellet, 1/3 alife which help with color, and 1/6 Chingmix SP80 Headbooster which promoted KOk growth as well 1/6 Chingmix SP80 Maxima which promots color and pearls. I dont follow the food rule of how much they eat in 5 min I just put good heaping spoon full per fish. They need the extra food if your doing the modified lighting schedule!!!! To do a pellet sandwitch you feed pellets in the evening and wat 30-60min then feed a cube of blood worms, krill, shrimp, chopped market shrimp, mysis, beefheart, meal worms etc. The idea is the body will process frozen/live food faster and the body has to break down the pellet so by doing this the food stays in the body longer allowing the fish to make best use of it. If you can find PeMysis use it!

Next topics will be coloring and kok growth!

Also if your not aware of Kens Fish food I HIGHLY recommend it. My fish love KENS PREMIUM SOFT&MOIST WITH KRILL LARGE 3.0 MM PELLET and since their is lots of krill in the blend they color up well. The No Carb Pellets looks perfect and I cant wait to try it as it does not use junk fillers. One thing to remember is the fish that make up a flowerhorn are herbivores so a strict protein diet is not a complete one. My maintenance pellet blend has hikari cichlid excel as well I try to keep plants for grazing.

I feed Ken's food as well. The Krill is awsome and the new super color enhancing pellets are the sh*t too. Ken has upgraded his food over the last year and I couldnt be a happier customer. The fish love it and do great on it as well..............
