OK I HAVE A 100 GAL AND I WANT TO REMOVE TO SAND AND REPLACE WITH GRAVEL. I HAVE FISH IN THE TANK AND DONT WANT TO STRESS THEM TOO MUCH, BUT ALSO PLAN ON PICKING UP NEW FISH TOMORROW MORNING. BEST WAY?
agree sand is way easyer to take care of then gravel and looks better IMO. But if u want to take it out while fish are in the tank use a new dust pan from the dallor store to clean the sand out and add the grave using the same method getting close to the bottom before pouring it out.
I just did this last night. I used a regualr water hose and just siphoned the sand out the window. The problem i see with a dust pan is that the sand would get stirred up in the water too much. I took out 2 inches of sand in my 75 in 30 minutes with the hose. Make sure you dont have any slack in the hose so that sand doesnt biuld up and clog it.
Also move all decorations and hiding spots to one side, then suck one side, put the hiding spot on the clean sidem then suck the other side. That workd good for me. I did the same with placing the gravel too..
When I removed my sand (I was replacing with black sand though) I scooped most of it out with a fish net. I removed most of the rocks and left only the driftwood and a few other decorations. I moved those to one side while I worked on the other. Then I used a hose to siphon out the remaining sand.
