I'm new to frontosas and I heard that they are good in colonys. I have had 1 Kigoma for a while and just got my Burundi today. I put my burundi in and my Kigoma is biting and chasing my Burundi... Does the colony have to be the same species? or whatever you call it? ie. Kigomas with only kigomas or....Burundi with other Burundis?

Additional info: My Kigoma is about 3.75" and my burundi is 3.5 inches...

Thank in advance.

If there are just two then you will generally see a dominant and submissive fish. I like to keep aggressive species in odd numbered groups of 3 or more. I believe you can mix frontosa species, but don't take my word as gold on that one.

Frontosas need space and numbers, they live and hunt in colonies in the wild, yet they are kept in pairs, trios or singles. Minimum requirements for a frontosa colony would be 180gal tank and 6-12 individuals (2/3 males rest females).

And yes, preferably one should keep different variants separated, even though Kigoma and Burundi variants are the same family.

how big is your tank? since you only have 2 fronts in there. both of them are trying to figure out who will be the dominant and the submissive one. sounds like your kigoma will be the dominant one. some big round river rocks, pots and caves will help your burundi not getting too beat up. they are good in colony in that way the dominant one cant pick on only one front.

Thanks.

It's a 30 long tank.
I'm guessing that I will get a few more and xfer them to my 125 and start a kigoma or a burundi colony.

I have to agree you need a larger tank, though I have kinda pushed the limits with my front colony i have 27 of them in a 150g but they are not grown yet and are about to go into a 300g 10ft

you wouldn't want to put different variants of frontosa's together because then you come up with hybrid frontosa's i breed zaire moba's and if i were to put another type of frontosa in the tank and they breed then the species strain wouldn't be as dominant and cost efficient hence hybrid fish
