Just changed my tank from gravel to sand. Can someone give me a rundown of what I should be doing over the next couple days to get clear again? As well as anything else I should know. Thanks!
what kind of sand did you use? You shouldn't have to do anything at all. it may take a little time to settle. Did you rinse it out well before adding to tank? If you can put some extra filter material on your intakes so you don't ruin any pumps or clog filters.
It will clear on its own make sure your intakes and outtakes on your filters aren't to low and impatient like I was my first time you can buy one of those clear water chemicals that will clump the sand particles up and speed the process along.
Do you guys think I can throw my fish in there while the sand is settling? Or should I wait until it settles? And I should obviously have my filter off until it settle, right?
What about my air rocks? Should I let those run, or will that just elongate the process?
well... alot of sand has clay in it as well. My tank did the same thing and the best thing you can do is water changes and filter it. This will take a while but eventually will work. If it is an empty tank (no organisms) then i would do large water changes regularly. If you have fish or other organisms in there just increase your water changes over what they would be say if you do 15 percent per week i would bump it to 25. It will take a while but eventually it will be worth it sand is a great substrate. Though it takes more upkeep I like it best.
What kind of upkeep are you talking about? I'm having an extremely hard time getting my syphon vacuum to work. I can't get it to work for the life of me! I know how to create a syphon, but can't get it to suck anything up. I know I probably sound like an idiot right now, but they're the facts of life haha.
