im getting a fx5 soon to replace my 305, how should i save my bacteria? should i throw in the existing beneficial bacteria from the ceramic rings into the new fluval fx5?

Have the FX5 running alongside the 305 for a couple of weeks. I use this method when swapping filters with pretty good success. 6 - 8 weeks would be a safe time frame.

yah that could work but that fluval fx5 and 305 would just blow my fish away! lol im gonna be using it in a 95 gal

It wouldn't be too bad. Just have the outlets pointing upwards; to my understanding the FX5 has full pivoting outlet nozzles. This is pretty much the easiest way to save the bb.

You could also run an adequately sized air driven sponge filter for that duration of time, and replace the 305 with that while using the FX5. It will just take longer, unless of course you want to just keep the sponge filter in the tank anyway.
