I have a 29 gallon tank that I'd like to set up for salt water. And would like to have a sump filter set up for it. If anyone has a link to a step by step post that I can't find or any advice would be great.

:) Normally, I'd give my standard "sump's where it's at dude". But, for 29 gallons, I gotta agree. Just use a canister.

since its a small tank, why not use a canister filter...

Sumps are really designed for bigger tanks... Like starting at 75 gallons. For a little 29, I personally will go with a HOB or even a canister.

There is no reason why you can't use a sump on a 29g tank. It helps keep the display yank clean, and gives you place to put the heater, add a protein skimmer, and auto topoff.
If your stand allows it use a 20g long. Then I would drill the 29g with a kit from glassholes.com and decide on bafflle layout or just run an open sump. Pickup a quality return pump like an eheim. Make sure the gph on pump is not more than the overflow can handle.

Lots of options. Look around some more and come back with some more specific questions.

I LOVE sumps. It just seems like to me it's a "big tank thing". Limitation is all in my head, I guess.

Not having all the hoses and heaters and stuff in the display is an even bigger advantage in a small tank than a big one. I just can't get my head around the small pipe sizes you could run. You could use, what, a 1/2 inch drain line?
