I had my tank setup with no problems up until a year ago when i had to move so i basically drained the tank and threw everything out. I have the eheim 2217 canister which i actually disconnected and left it filled for a year with the water that was in it after i disconnected.yesterday i filled up my tank with tap water and i set up the canister and I plugged it in and was wondering should i have prepared the canister all over with new material. would it be ok if i just left it since the bacteria will get cleaned by the filter? should i disconnect the tank and change something? should i drain the tank again? should i just runit as a freshwater tank at this point? i'm not really sure what to do .can someone please help me?

Clean the filter. You may have to replace the media but you do need to clean the filter. If you ran the filter on the tank after refilling it, I would drain and refill just to be safe. Who knows what creeping around in there. What you do after that be it FW or SW is up to you. Follow your heart!
What does everyone think about running the tank with some bleach in it for a bit? Kill any baddies and then drain and dechlorinate with prime? I know my LFS does this often when switching out tanks or problem tanks.

Just to clarify.... I understand i have to clean the filter but how exactly do I do that and what parts inside my eheim should i replace or reuse?how do i know that i have to replace something?
