How to sex Geophagus sp. red/orange head

Males usually have broader head profiles, longer pelvic fin extensions, will behave more dominantly, and perhaps the biggest giveaway as full sized adults in good condition, solid orange heads.

Around the 7-10cm mark when males still aren't just colouring up, the best sexing method is head profile and pelvic extension length.
 
IME they look about the same as juvies, then males develop faster (especially in traits like extensions on the pelvic fins like Japes mentioned), then female catch up and they look somewhat similar again (but males still have longer pelvc fin extensions), then the males grow some more to adult size, which is quite a bit bigger than females. That's why I asked how big/old the fish were....
