So I've had one as a grow out since it was 2", as it starts to grow and show some color what should I be looking for to sex it?

My silver saum is still an unknown (dang GTs grow slow!) and my little Nic is showing signs of being a female.

That's a tough one. I have a pair and unless I'm looking at them together it still tales me a second or two to figure out which I'm looking at. Overall the males have more red in the unpaired fins, are more stocky and tall bodied, and display more brilliant colors. With only one fish it would be very difficult for me personally but maybe others can help out more.
Oh, and notice the front portion of the dorsal fin. My female has very little red there while the males red in this location remains consistent with the rest of his finnage.
