how to siphon sand

Some say that shaking the siphon over the sand will stir up waste and pull it up. This has never worked for me. I briefly touch the siphon to the sand to get a good pull. Yes, this will pull some sand up, but I use pay sand (which is very inexpensive), so I don't mind adding more over time.
What I do is stick my hand in the sand all the way to the bottom, move it around through the whole tankto stir up as much as possible. For sand you should have 2x the recomended filtration, so right there your filters should pick up a lot of the debris that get stirred up. After doing this, wait 20 minutes for the debris/sand to settle and the filter to do its job. After this siphon out any debris that are sitting on top.
I use a mini hydro cleaner takes longer to clean than gravel an you do get a litle sand but works perty good an its the best way i found to clean sand
