how to start mfk

I have two fish tanks right now a comumity freshwater tank 20 gallons and a 29 gallon saltwater reef tank but I am thinking of starting a monster tank how do you think I should start out?
 
Make a list of the fish you're interested in, do a research on them, decide which one/s you like and go from there. The size of the tank depends on your stock. MFK will help you with the rest. And welcome to MFK. Once you got used to this site you can also read the stickies.
 
Yup, you need to either decide what you want ot what you can afford. Then go from there. If you want something like a RTC then you need to go very large. If you want a large discus tank you just need a large tank. Just remember everyone has different standards for big tanks. Some think a 125g is huge others built 4000g tanks and still wish they went bigger. The tank i wanted/where i wanted it in my house would cost me upwards of 35,000 to get setup till i get the floor reenforced have a wall taken out to get it in the house and all. So a 220g was as big as i can got for the moment. So figure what kind of fish you want or what size tank you can afford and we will help the rest.
 
What kind of monsters are we talking about here?
 
I am thinking about getting a 55 gallon tank and putting in a few silver dollars or some oscars .What do you guys think?
 
As a growout, I would say yes. But for life in a 55g, no.
 
I like the skipping steps option! Go straight to a 150 and your future oscars will be nice and happy. With a massive amount of filtration of course. Oscars are pooping machines!
