I have java ferns and anubias nana in my 55g aquarium, a few months ago my plants were flourishing, they were healthy looking and were growing fast, but as of lately (2-3 months ago) they look unhealthy (brownish and black dots and patches) and their growth has slowed to a standstill. I would like to know what i can do to stimulate plant growth, health, and restore my plants to their former glory. Thanks

If your plants are getting enough light, and nitrate from the fish waste,
many plants require minerals that may or not be supplied with regular water changes.
There is virtually no iron or anything else other than calcium in my tap water, so I supplement weekly with an generic liquid mineral fertilizer.

Would need more information.. What light are your using? Are you dosing any fertilizers or suppliments into the water? Or Root tabs? How often do you change the water? Are these plants in the substrate or on wood or a rock or something? if substrate what substrate are you running?

Some good pictures of them would help a ton to determine if its an algae issue, Nutrient deficent issue, or what ever it is.

It could be that your bulbs are getting old and not putting out the same amount of light that they were a few months ago. Additionally, adding CO2 will help with plant growth.

By the descriptions of your issues it sounds like nutrient deficiency issues. Not lighting. The plants you have listed are a low light plant. So it doesnt take a whole lot of light.

I agree. Those are very low demand plants. The brown spots are not algae, are they? My rubberlip keeps them pretty clean in my tank, and I don't do much with them at all. Anubias grow very slow. I might get a new leaf every couple weeks at best. My java ferns develop spots when they're reproducing. The leaves with spots turn into mama plants and I get a bunch of young ones, but the mother leaf dies.

This here is pretty spot on..

Would really need to see pics of the concerns from the OP to completely verify if this is the case (Algae/Plant reproduction) or nutrient deficient issue.

Ive got a couple of different Anbuias plants. Some in a low light set up that grow slowly but very well and some in my high light/Co2/EI tank and ive got growth so fast out of them its new growth daily and they flower all the time.
