How to stop a leak

Is there any way to stop a leak due to a broken seal other than re sealing ? Would underwater glue work ?

I bought a cheap small canister and the seal never worked right (always leaked), I read online about this and tried petroleum jelly applied liberally around the seal and it's been great since. I've taken the top off the canister a few times and still no leak at all

Your mileage may vary, but this could be an option, if nothing else for a temporary solution
