How to stop Intake from clogging?

How do I stop my intake filter from clogging? There are top plant roots that get clogged. How do I prevent that?

Putting a sponge over the intake may help.

Deadeye nailed it. If it is floating plant matter than you might have too much surface agitation. Floaters don't do really well with high flow HOB filters.

The problem is that my hob filter intake gets clogged. On the outside. So I need to pick it off the intake filter, which isn't a major problem, but I'd rather it not.

That’s why the sponge helped. I got a sponge on Amazon for cheap similar to what is on a sponge filter and it covers the intake. Traps all the leaves and crap.

When it gets on the sponge it no longer clogs the filter itself, and it’s easier to get off (take out during wc and brush off).
