i currently brought a breeding colony of 15 electric yellows i was told one of my females needs to be stripped as she never spits her babys out and can stave herself

I like to wait until the fish is holding for 18-21 days and while doing a water change, catch female in net and hold net in 5 gallon bucket of water. Female usually spits out the fry.

just take fish out of water for like 20-30 secs each time,using ur thumb nail or hair pin delicately to open the lower jaw of the mouth and dip the whole fish in tank filled with pre-existing tank water,the fry will come out by themselves but if they r still eggs,u need to turn the fish down with open jaws and put eggs in egg tumbler.the mbuna eggs will turn into fry in 14 days but it is advisable not to even touch the fish before 17-20 days if u want successful spawn and after some experience with it u can do it on any day
She will not starve herself, they are very good at holding and no need to strip, place her in a breeder net in the main tank and she will spit when ready. After they are free swimming some females will allow the fry back in their mouth for security, like when you approach the tank. After she spits you can leave her in the net with the fry or return her to the community. Or you can just let her spit in the main tank if you do not want to raise the fry and you will have some survive.
