I have a tank 48x15x18 and have just picked up a new tank 54x17x26.

I want to transfer all my fish and content from one tank to the other. What is the best way to do this? If I put the fish in buckets how long will they survive for? Should I save the water for the new tank? Will it go through a mini cycle etc?

If anyone has experience of doing this I would be grateful for some step-by-step advice.

The fish I have are:
10 x tiger barbs
5 x torpedo barbs
2 x rainbows
1 x bala
1 x b/n plec

thanks

What i do is put them in a pucket and take a air line hose and put it in the tank suck one side and just put it in the bucket. That is what i did to aclimate my fish and move them. Hope this helps you. GL

Put the fish in a bucket with an air stone. Transfer as much gravel/sand as possible as well as as much water as possible. If you continue to use the same filters as well then you shouldn't notice a cycle, it will just seem like a water change to the fish (other than the whole bucket part).

great advice so far. what i did is move the fish into a clean, only used for fish bucket. no soap or chemical residue. take the water i want to transfer out first so i dont transfer as much crud. then take the gravel and stuff out rinse in tank water or treated tap water and move to the new tank. make sure filter media stays submerged at all times. and use the same filters. if you want to upgrade the filters to a larger size. just run them both. at least for a month.
