1) Before you attempt taking pictures clean the glass inside and out
2.)take the pictures at night with all light sources off except the tank
3.)get as much light as you can into the tank add lighting if you can
4.)use the fastest speed your camera has
5.)NO FLASHES it washes out the fishes color. If you can't control the flash put a piece of masking tape over it to diffuse the bright flash.
6.)Press the shutter button half-way down to focus, than all the way down to take the picture. thank you vanimate for this one.

expect to take approx 10 pictures to get 1 good one -Anne

any other tips or tricks please add them its how we all learn

Be patient and sit in one spot when you're trying to take pics.

If you chase your fish all around the tank, they'll never trust you when they see the camera out.

Color temp of the bulb is as important as well. Not all cameras translate color the same, and if you want your fish to show it's true color, stick to brighter, whiter light.

You can use this chart to compare to the kelvin rating of your bulb:

Shutter speed. usually in the hundreds i.e. 100, 300, and so on.

if your using a digital camera its the lil stick figure running on the menu

it definitely helps to increase the overhead lighting as much as possible, and reduce the surrounding lighting as much as possible, therefore...

- if you can, add a spare aquarium light to the top of the tank...or add several
- turn off all the other lights in the room so the aquarium lights are the only major source of light.

doing both of these things may require the fish getting acclimatized to the new surroundings, but this will likely only take several minutes if at all.

ALSO consider using a tripod as this will reduce a lot of the blurriness associated with fish pics in non-flash. as stated earlier in this thread, let the fish come into your view of the camera, don't chase it down!--
